Supporting Those Affected by the LA Fires

We've been focused on supporting multiple organizations on the ground in LA this week with distributing new, unworn basics for children that have lost their homes in the LA fires.

In 2017, our family home was destroyed by the Atlas fire in Napa. This is personal for us. The overwhelm that comes with replacing a home, let alone all of your personal belongings is immense. And there is so much that simply cannot be replaced. If anyone is in this position, here is some advice on where to start:

✍️ Document Your Experience: Write down everything you can remember—what happened before, during, and after the fire. Include details about your home, possessions, and any interactions with insurance companies. Recollections fade, and having a contemporaneous record can be invaluable if you need to make an insurance claim or pursue legal action.

🗂️ Gather Evidence: Check your camera roll and other records for photos or videos that document your home’s interior and possessions. This can be critical for insurance claims. Ask friends or family for any images they might have, and collect receipts, invoices, or architectural drawings. Keep everything organized in one place.

🔍 Monitor Litigation Efforts: Large-scale fires often lead to litigation. For example, the Atlas Fire resulted in a major case against PG&E that paid out claims to fire victims. Research which law firms are representing victims and consider joining their efforts. These firms often pool resources and charge reasonable fees, which can lead to significant recoveries.

🤓 Review Your Insurance Policy: Understand what your homeowner’s insurance covers, especially for fire damage and temporary living expenses. Contact your broker immediately for clarification and to begin the claims process.

🔭 Check for Special Policies or Relief Measures: Municipalities may offer relief, such as pausing property tax collection or deferring homeowners’ association dues. Stay informed about local policies that could ease your financial burden.
